1st significant snowfall of the season blasts Lethbridge drivers – Lethbridge

Lethbridge, Alta., residents woke up to a blast of cold from old man winter on Tuesday morning.

For some drivers, the first significant snowfall of the season proved to be a challenge.

With slick roads and decreased visibility, motorists are being reminded to slow down.

Owner of Drivers Edge, Mona Delaney, says there are several tips drivers should consider when navigating the streets.

“We need to remember to clear our cars off completely, the roof, the hood, everything,” said Delaney.

“Then I think it’s important to adjust your driving… Following distances need to be way further back, you need to have way bigger following distances and that’s the number of causes of casualty collisions, is following too closely.”

City of Lethbridge transportation operations manager Juliane Ruck shared that sentiment, especially when it comes to snow-clearing vehicles.

“It’s very important to stay back at least five car lengths away from our plows,” explained Ruck. “There are lots of blind spots when you operate this big equipment.”

On Monday night, snow and ice control crews were out plowing and sanding priority one routes including Whoop Up, Mayor Magrath and University drives.

In total, 19 operators are split between morning and evening shifts, working around the clock to clear the roads.

“We are always looking for ways to improve and being better in what we are doing. Our operators are all very experienced and they are dedicated to keeping this community on the move,” said Ruck.
